Professional Overview

Associate Professor Anand Deva graduated from the University of Sydney in 1991 with Class I honours and was awarded the University Medal in Medicine.  After completing internship and residency at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, he was admitted into advanced training in general surgery in 1994 and completed a Masters of Surgery in 1996 investigating the disinfection and sterilisation of surgical instruments. He commenced advanced training in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery in 1996 and obtained his FRACS in 2000. Following this, he spent 12 months attached to New York University where he pursued both clinical and research interests.  He has been appointed to Liverpool Hospital since 2001 and became head of Department in 2008. He has also held an academic appointment at UNSW and participated in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and basic science research since 2001. He is currently the NSW chairman of training in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and has served on the board since 2009.

Research Interest

Associate Professor Deva has made significant research contributions in the field of implant infection and wound healing. He is co-director of the Surgical Infection Research Group and is co-supervisor to full time postgraduate research students. Current laboratory work is centred around the science and clinical significance of bacterial biofilm infection using both in vitro and in vivo models to generate data.  The role of bacteria in the pathogenesis of implant failure and technologies to prevent bacterial attachment are being investigated. Clinical research interests include the treatment of craniomaxillofacial trauma, use of fat grafting, outcomes in cosmetic surgery and the use of dermal substitutes in breast reconstruction.
