Modern History at Macquarie has a strong reputation for both its teaching and research. We offer diverse programs of study with particular strengths in Australian History, World and global History, and Europe and the West. We also offer exciting units in women's and gender history and the history of film and popular culture.

Modern History is made up of research-focused historians from diverse backgrounds who specialize in gender history, world history, postcolonial history, media history, European history and Australian history. Modern History also hosts a research centre - the Centre for Media History.

Undergraduate and Postgraduate studies in history will give you a broad range of essential workplace skills, developing your ability to think critically, construct logical arguments, and to write clearly and persuasively. Studying history will help you make sense of the world and your place in it.

Big History

Professor David Christian and Tracy Sullivan are working, with the support of Bill Gates, on the creation of a free online high school syllabus in big history.  A pilot version of the syllabus has been introduced and a second pilot with Australian schools will begin in September 2012. The finished website is expected to be publicly available mid-2013.  For further information, go to bighistoryproject.com .  Schools interested in taking part in the second pilot can apply through the website.

Macquaire University has also launched a Big History Institute as part of the project.  Visit the website at www.bighistoryinstitute.org/
