Degrees and Other Awards

Russian at Macquarie University can be studied in internal and external modes:

  • as part of a Macquarie University degree
  • as part of a Diploma in Languages program (transfer between Diploma and degree is possible for qualified candidates before completion of the program)
  • as a single unit
  • as part of a degree at any Australian university (cross-institution)

Students can further their studies in Russian by completing an Honours year, MA or PhD.

 

Degree

Students have the option to either major in Russian or incorporate it as an addition into their chosen academic program. Russian units may be taken as part of different degrees and awards, the most common of which are Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of International Studies and various combined degrees with an Arts or an International Studies component. Major in Russian Studies

Students enrolling for a major in Russian Studies develop proficiency in the language and gain an understanding of the society and culture of the country where it is spoken. Introductory language units do not require any prior knowledge of the language. To gain a major in Russian Studies, students will have to complete a minimum of 24 cp with the prefix RSN, including 12cp at 300 level.

Language units will be done in consecutive order and have prerequisites. Students who have completed HSC Russian extension or Continuers Band 4, 5, 6 or the equivalent cannot enrol in introductory language units. Students who have completed their secondary education in Russian cannot enrol in introductory and intermediate language units - details of their program should be determined in consultation with the Head of Department.

For a major in Russian Studies students can choose from the following units, with RSN355 the compulsory capstone unit:

It is recommended that students complement their studies of Russian language and culture by enrolling in one or more of the following units with a European focus:

The Department of International Studies very strongly encourages its language students to take the opportunity to travel and study abroad as part of their undergraduate program. The university provides generous travel scholarships for this purpose and has a range of overseas exchange partners. The semester abroad is fully integrated into the degree structure and under the advice of the co-ordinator of Russian Studies, students will be enrolling in a selection of the following units for their semester abroad:

Diploma in Languages

The Diploma in Languages (Russian) is a three-year part-time program that is equivalent to a major in Russian (24 credit points). It is open to anyone who qualifies for admission to a degree program at Macquarie University or an approved tertiary institution. A Diploma in Languages (Russian) can be completed together with or after a degree in another field at Macquarie or another tertiary institution. Students can transfer from a Diploma to a degree once they have achieved 12 credit points with a GPA of 2.0.

Single Unit (Non-award)

Non-award enrolment is for students who wish to commit themselves only to short periods of study. No admission criteria are specified.

Cross-institution Study

Students from another university in Australia may study Russian at Macquarie University on a cross-institutional basis and have the Russian units credited towards their degree at their home university.

Honours in Russian

An Honours program (part-time or full-time) is available for those students who have successfully completed a major in Russian as part of a Bachelor's program. It involves a teaching component consisting of 4 units, of which two are common to all Honours programs in European Languages, as well as a thesis. A minimum GPA of 3.0 at the third year level applies. More information is available at the department-wide Honours page.
