Department of International Studies - Italian Studies

Italian at Macquarie

Italian Studies at Macquarie UniversityItalian at MQ

Italian Studies has recently undertaken substantial curriculum revision and is in the process of introducing new course materials and up-to-date teaching methods in all units. New units, including online units and study abroad units, have also been introduced.

We offer a blended approach to language learning, with an emphasis on:

  • communication in natural contexts and on topical issues
  • listening and reading comprehension incorporating authentic texts (ie. magazines, newspapers, film and video)
  • detailed treatment of and practice in Italian grammar (including self-correcting and online exercises)
  • contemporary Italian culture and society

In addition to language units at all levels, you can chose to do options on a given aspect of Italian culture and society, including Italian cinema and literature, or enrol in a study abroad unit.

Internships

Students now also have the opportunity to pursue an internship in a foreign language organisation such as SBS, consulates and international companies.

Research

Students wishing to conduct research at Honours level or at Postgraduate level are encouraged to approach the Head of Department to discuss possible research topics. Areas of research expertise include Italian and European cinema, with an emphasis on migrant and diaspora cinema; modern and postmodern Italian literature; the Italian Renaissance; globalisation and migration; intercultural communication.
