Study Abroad

Macquarie University encourages its language students to take the opportunity to travel and study abroad at an approved overseas university with which it has signed an exchange agreement. The university provides generous travel scholarships for this purpose. Successfully completed study abroad units may be counted towards a Macquarie award (degree or diploma). Students are expected to enrol in study abroad units before leaving the country. They pay HECS fees at Macquarie and are exempted from paying fees in the host university. Study undertaken at institutions with which Macquarie has no exchange agreement cannot be counted towards a Macquarie award.

There are two modes of in-country study:

a) Language study abroad

Students attend a short intensive language and culture course specifically designed for non-native speakers of French. Prior to departure, they enrol in one of the three residential short units FRN131, FRN231 or FRN331, as appropriate. At present, there are arrangements in place with the École de Management de Strasbourg (at the Université de Strasbourg; no prior knowledge and 100 level students only) and the Université de Lausanne (Switzerland; all levels). The residential units are offered during the summer vacation. Concrete information is usually made available around August or September for units running during the following vacation.

b) Exchange program

Students have the opportunity to count one semester of approved study at a French university towards their degree at Macquarie. They enrol in semester-long units offered by any French university with which Macquarie has an exchange agreement. Candidates must have a good level of French fluency. Their program of study must be discussed with Macquarie's French staff and approved by the Head of the Department of International Studies before enrolment can take place. Students will be assessed by staff in the French program upon their return. A maximum of 12 cp can be included in a coherent study program in French at the third year level. Up to 9 cp can be earned in the form of In-Country Study Units. Any balance will be credited in the form of regular Macquarie units in a relevant discipline.
