Research
The current research profile for Asian Studies is rich and varied for both the Chinese and Japanese disciplines. The fields of research being undertaken by the Chinese staff include: Modern Chinese Literature, Confucianism and Intellectual History, the History of Shanghai, the Qing dynasty court and theatre, Languages of medieval Central Asian and Nestorian monuments in Quanzhou. The Japanese Studies staff are actively involved in research on pure and applied linguistics in Japanese, Manga - Visual narrative and social commentary, Japanese literature, ICT-failitated language teaching and socio-legal studies of Japan.

Research interests:
Historical, socio-cultural and psychological issues depicted in literature. She is currently involved in interdisciplinary research into youth cultures, with particular focus on manga and anime, in conjunction with the English Department at Macquarie University.
Ms Christie Barber

- Representation of gender and identity in Japanese popular media, with particular focus on manga and anime
- Youth culture, and youth issues, in Japan
- Translation of popular media
Dr Shirley Chan

Research interests:
Dr Chan has research interest in Chinese philosophy, especially Confucianism, and early Chinese history. Her current research is on the Confucian political thinking in the newly excavated Guodian bamboo slips.

- Interests are on Mass Media; social and cultural changes in China; also on contemporary Chinese Literature being adapted into film.

- Classical Chinese Literature: PhD thesis on "Li Ruzhen and His Flowers in the Mirror".

Prof Kane has broad interests in the field of Chinese Studies, including linguistics, politics, intellectual history and current affairs.
Ms Tomoko Koyama
Lecturer, Japanese Studies
Research interests:
Tomoko's areas of interest and expertise include language maintenance program for background speakers/overseas returnees, reading mechanism from psycholinguistic perspective and intercultural pragmatics. She is also an author of Handbook in cross-cultural Communication: Japan.
Dr Sung-Ae Lee

Asian cinema, Colonisation in Asia, Trauma Studies, Korean fiction and film depicting the Korean War and its aftermath, the fiction, poetry, life-writing and popular media of the Korean diaspora.
