I am an undergraduate student. Can I take Coptic language or history classes as part of my degree at Macquarie or another university?

If you are an Australian student and wish to enrol in the B.A. or Bachelor of Ancient History to study Coptic Studies, you need to apply to the University Admissions Centre (UAC).

These degrees are not currently available to international students: we are working to make them available, and will update this in the future when they are.

If you are an undergraduate student at Macquarie or another Australian university and wish to take one or more Coptic Studies units, you have a number of options, depending on the nature of your degree. You need not be enrolled in a history degree to be able to study Coptic: it may be possible to take a Coptic unit as an elective in another degree (e.g. science, commerce, law), or as part of a BA with a major in another field.

Please contact us for further information.

I am just interested in taking one or two subjects from the Coptic Studies program. How do I enrol?

If you just wish to take one or two subjects out of the Coptic Studies program you would apply to the Centre for Open Education and enrol in Non-award study. You will get the same materials and do the same work as students enrolled in a degree, and if you later decide to change into a degree program, it is possible to transfer your credit.

I already have an M.A. or comparable degree. Can I come to Macquarie to do a research degree such as a Ph.D. in Coptic Studies?

The staff in the Coptic Studies program at Macquarie have research interests in various areas of Graeco-Roman, Byzantine, and Early Islamic Egypt, including cultural and religious history, monasticism, and Coptic literature, and are available to supervise research theses (Ph.D. and MPhil) in these fields. Please contact us to discuss your options.
