Looking for a fun, low cost way to improve fitness and coordination? Then the Macquarie University Squash Club is the place for you!
Macquarie University Squash Club was established at the university in the late 1960's and participates in the NSW Squash Pennants (Northern District) as well as providing for student lunchtime squash and Uni Games teams.
We caught up with Club President Stephen Ryan to find out some more about the club.
1. What Competitions does the Club participate in and does the club cater for all standards?
The MQU Squash Club participates the Sydney North Pennant competition. Our teams are graded from division 1 to 16, so all standards are catered for - from beginner through to intermediate and advanced. Pennant teams are generally mixed gender - men's & women's. Comp nights are usually Wednesdays or Thursdays. There are two seasons per year:
· Autumn Pennant (March to June)
· Spring Pennant (August to November)
Each season consists of 15 rounds (plus 2 weeks of finals). Our home courts are at the Macquarie University Sport and Aquatic Centre and away matches are played at various other clubs around Northern Sydney including Willoughby, North Sydney, Lane Cove, Marsfield, Thornleigh and Elanora.
MQU Squash also run internal round robin competitions throughout the year as well as annual Club Championships (August) and we are hosting the Macquarie University Squash Open in September 2016. Several squash club players are looking forward to competing in the 2016 Eastern University Games in July and Australian University Games in September.
2. How many teams will the club be entering in competitions 2016?
MQU Squash Club has 19 pennant teams competing in the Autumn 2016 Pennant. Teams consist of 5 to 6 players. Pennant matches are singles however individual results count towards a team total which makes team spirit and support important. After matches the home club provides a light meal and refreshments for the visiting team making the Pennant comp very friendly and social competition.
3. When and where will the club commence training in 2016?
During Pennant seasons, our club offers numerous flexible training sessions:
Mondays 2:00pm - 4:00pm (Student Social Session - new players welcome)
Mondays 7:00pm - 10:00pm
Tuesdays 8:00pm - 10:00pm
Saturdays 10:00am - 12:00pm
Sundays 10:00am - 12:00pm
Newcomers are welcome to attend any of our training sessions - in particular the student session on Monday afternoons.
Training is optional and involves games and skill drills or more formal coaching - squads or individual lessons from our club coaches.
4. What social activities does the club have planned for 2016?
Apart from the weekly Pennant Comp & Social Squash sessions, our club plans several off-court activities including: Movie nights, Trivia nights, Club dinners and pre-season beach/sandhill team bonding sessions.
5. What are some of the future goals for the club?
Our main aim is to engage more students. In recent years our club has had an excellent member retention rate and has provided a means for alumni to maintain a strong connection with the University. As such, our Alumni and community membership bases keep growing but it's also important that we continue to attract new student members.
To attract more students to squash and get more players on court during the vacant day time hours, we plan to expand our social squash program by adding sessions on alternative days and times (currently only one session on Mondays 2:00 - 4:00pm).
The Squash club launched a 'Learn Squash Course' in Semester 1. This 5-week program introduced new players to the basics of the game including technique, rules and tactics. Feedback from participants was very positive and some have already joined the squash club keen to play comp next season. We are aim to expand this program in Semester 2 providing another great avenue into club squash.
There are currently two competitions per annum:
- Autumn competition (March to July)
- Spring competition (August to November)
We also field teams to compete at Eastern University Conference and Australian University Games.
Pennant games are played on Wednesdays or Thursday evenings at 7:00pm.
Internal competitions - Mondays (7:00pm - 10:00pm) or Sundays (10:00am - 12:00pm).
