We have a wide range of qualified fitness instructors, personal trainers and health professionals at Macquarie University Sport and Aquatic Centre. We are here to help you with your health and fitness journey and ensure you are getting the most out of your training.

Alex

How long have you worked at Macquarie University Sport and Aquatic Centre? I began working as a Group Fitness Contractor in November 2015, but didn't join the MUSAC Health Club team until Jan 2016.

What is your favourite training style at present? Given the demands of my Group Fitness role across four programs, I need to stay in peak physical condition. I utilise HIIT sessions on the rowing erg to keep my CV fitness right up there, as well as an Upper/Lower split resistance training program, focusing on unilateral movements to eliminate muscle imbalances, and I throw in an explosive power session each week, to keep me sharp.

Guys love ‘cheat’ day, Girls love ‘treats’, what is your favourite reward to your self? My weekly physical exertion is more than ample to allow me regular dietary treats and cheats, so my real 'reward' is parking my trashed body on the couch to veg out and log several quality hours on the PS4.

What is your top tip to keep motivated? When it comes to physicality, I always say "It's better to have and not need, than to need and not have". So my advice is to train, knowing that when your moment arrives, its too late to train for it - be ready.

Who is your favourite cartoon character? It's gotta be Goku from DBZ.

What 3 exercises can make a huge difference to most people today? In the age of the "sitters", any exercise that cures gluteal amnesia is king! My pick for the 3 biggest difference makers would have to be the Glute-Ham Developer, Loaded Hip Thrusts, and Rear Foot Elevated Split Squats. By reawakening the sleeping giants in your backside, you'll have a superior posterior that is both fashionable and functional, and not to mention, strong glutes = happy knees!

Describe yourself in three words: Easy going, motivated, honest.

What is your favorite training style at present? High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)

Guys love ‘cheat’ day, Girls love ‘treats’, what is your favorite reward to yourself? Going out for a nice dinner

What is your top tip to keep motivated? Constantly remind yourself of your goals and why you’ve set them.

Who is your favorite cartoon character? Winnie the Pooh

What is the biggest issue facing women's fitness today? Body Image

What three exercises do you really believe in? Squat variations, Lunges and HIIT

What is your favourite training style at present and why? HIIT or Tabata style workouts due to a few injuries and time constraints at present
Guys love 'cheat' day, girls love 'treats', what is your favourite reward to yourself? I love to lose myself at the beach with a big bar of chocolate
What is your top tip to keep motivated? Write down your goal and keep it visible
What common mistake do you see our members making and give us your top three tips on how to fix it? Movement when using the elliptical trainer
Keep the feet flat on the pedals
Drive through the heels to activate your glutes

What are your three top coaching points for the Push up plank? 
1. Maintain posture
2. Exhale on the way up and inhale on the way down
3. Focus on a steady rhythm to help maintain your balance

What is your favourite training style at present? High intensity interval training (HIIT)
What is your top tip to keep motivated? Set achievable targets
What is the latest thing you have learned that has made a big impact on our members? A more personable approach to our members to make them feel more valued and not just a number
What three exercises can make a huge difference to most people today? Interval training, squats and seated row to improve posture
