Recreational program

Welcome to our new Recreational program

Mini MacWarriors, get ready to conquer the elements!

Our recreational gymnastics classes run for school-aged children every day, and we are proud to be affiliated with the Launchpad program. This program is designed to promote levels of excellence within gymnastics recreational clubs and Macquarie University Gymnastics was one of the pioneer clubs involved with Launchpad.

Macquarie University Gymnastics is an official Gymnastics NSW registered club. All of the teachers are minimum level one gymnastics coaches and hold Senior First Aid certificates.LaunchPad

Gymnastics for All is a sport for everyBODY, regardless of age, gender or ability. It is the perfect activity to prepare children for long-term participation in sport and develops vital life skills.

The aim of our Recreational classes is to develop strength, flexibility, co-ordination, spatial awareness and balance along with a specific set of skills for each level. Children develop these skills through fun, fitness, gymnastics fundamentals and a friendship philosophy with special emphasis placed on safety.

The Water level mantra is building strength and flexibility; generally children will come from our Junior Gym program or have little to no experience in gymnastics. It is expected that children are able to follow direction and be familiar with a class situation. Many of the basic fundamental skills in gymnastics are taught in the Water level, including entries to handstands and cartwheels, forward and backward rolls, correct landing techniques and basic trampoline skills.

Water is divided into two streams - White and Blue. When children complete Water they will progress to Fire.

Water classes run for one hour and have a maximum teacher/student ratio of 1: 10.

Children in Fire generally will have had some experience in the fundamentals of gymnastics and will often have progressed from our Water level. Fire is our intermediate gymnastics class and is suitable to children who already have a basic grounding in gymnastics. This level will emphasize building a higher level of strength, particularly core strength, aiming to reinforce good technique in preparation for more advanced skills. Gymnasts in Fire begin to advance and link skills learned in Water. Children in this level will learn holds and swings on bars, bridge kick-overs, handstands on the low beam and somersaults into the foam pit.

Fire is divided into two streams - Yellow and Red. When children complete Fire they will progress to Air. Fire classes run for one hour and have a maximum 1:10 ratio.

Air is our skill development gymnastics class and is appropriate for advanced children who don't want to be competitive gymnasts. Children frequently will have had formal gymnastics experience and will often have progressed from our Fire level.

Air introduces jumps, handstands and cartwheels to the beam and children within Air will start work on backflips with front handsprings. Within this level, proper technique is stressed in a more serious tone.

Air is divided into two streams - Pink and Purple with children who complete Air progressing to Land. Air classes run for two hours and have a maximum 1:10 ratio.

Land is our top gymnastics recreational level and is for children who wish to train competitive skills in a non-competitive environment. Land is about having fun while training and is suitable for ex-competitive gymnasts who want to return to the sport. Land is divided into two streams - Brown and Green.

Children in Land are expected to attend two-hour classes, twice a week and have a 1:10 ratio.
