We are all connected. Whether you are a politician, plumber, librarian or teacher – we all share this wonderful living planet. It feeds us, shelters us, sustains us. It gives us life. So, it only makes sense that we want it to be balanced, healthy and thriving, so that we, too, can be healthy and thrive.
As responsible global citizens, we owe it to ourselves and to each other to be good to this world of ours. And we can do that simply by developing a keener awareness of environmental issues and taking some thoughtful steps from there. From our options to our actions, we can make a positive impact on the welfare of the planet. By nurturing, protecting and preserving our environment, we – and those who will come after us – can continue to enjoy its amazing resources and wonders.
Be good to the planet by personally pledging to practice any of these suggestions:
Batteries and electronic waste (or ‘e-waste’) need to be recycled appropriately because...
many components can be reused or refurbished. In addition, some components can contain materials that render them hazardous, depending on their condition and density.
Community e-waste facilities
We have partnered with City of Ryde to host a recycling station for students and staff. The drop off station is located in the MUSE Student Connect Foyer (18 Wally's Walk) where the following items can be recycled:
- Household batteries
- Fluorescent light globes - all sized compact gloves and tubes (household lights only)
- Printer cartridges (excluding large cartridges from multi-function devices)
- Mobile phones - including handsets, batteries and accessories

Macquarie University e-waste
Macquarie University uses Sims E-Recycling to dispose of our e-waste. Hazardous substances such as lead and cadmium are safely recovered and disposed of in the most eco-friendly way possible. Any components sent overseas for processing are sent to large firms and do not end up with small-scale street processors.To request an e-waste collection from your area, please contact Property via the online Services Request form.

Doyle Brother's Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) - a facility that successfully recovers massive quantities of recyclable/reusable material that would traditionally go straight to land fill. It recovers over 75% of all material it receives from our campus bins for reuse.
Even though we have a system that gives us great outcomes, litter that doesn't end up in our bins can end up in our creeks or in the lake, and can have devastating impacts on the plants and wildlife. You can help keep Macquarie clean and green in two ways:
- Avoid creating waste in the first place by using reusable cups, bottles, bags, containers and cutlery.
- When you see litter on campus:
- Snap It on Instagram
- Tag It #litterati and #waste_type (e.g. #litterati #plastic, By using these hashtags, you will be actively helping us to identify problem spots for us to manage.)
- Bin It to keep our campus clean and green.

the humble tap. Tap water is free and safe to consume directly from the tap in Australia. Tap water has only 1% the environmental impact of bottled water! You can take action to reduce the high costs of bottled water by filling up at any of the campus Tap It refill stations, carrying a reusable bottle with you, and making a pledge to choose the tap over buying bottled water.

Co-Hop is Connect Macquarie Park's new transport planning and ride-share matching tool that rewards you and your buddies as you commute. Bushcare volunteers alongside professional regenerators have been working to restore native...
vegetation on campus since 2008. Bushcare@MQ meets at various sites around campus to help preserve the biodiversity of our beautiful campus. We meet with a Bush Regeneration expert who tell us the work plan for the session. Bushcarers are provided with all the tools and equipment they need - and of course light refreshments! Since 2014 Macquarie University Sustainability has been working on creating an onsite sustainable garden that incorporates permaculture gardening design principles based on the natural/organic gardening concepts by Bill Mollison and David Holmgren. What we’re doing here at Macquarie Sustainability is promoting sustainable use of space by using small-scale permaculture gardening principles. greens, the kind we grow indoors, have other benefits too, apart from their aesthetic appeal!
Indoor plants significantly improve a whole range of aspects of our indoor environment. The benefits cover a spectrum from physically cleaner air to direct beneficial effects on psychological health, task performance, illness reduction and productivity. As well as absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, natural plants act as 'pollution fighters' by absorbing chemicals released by furnishings, carpets, printers, copiers etc in our indoor and office environment. Making new furniture takes a lot of energy. By recycling our old furniture, we save the need to cut trees for raw materials...
There are many creative ways to use or recycle unwanted furniture. You can sell your furniture for cash, scrap furniture that is not fit for re-use, re-use (pintrest is your best friend for ideas here), reupholster for a new look, repurpose, give to family and friends or donate to a charity like The Salvation Army, St.Vincent de Paul, or The Bower Re-use and Repair Centre.
The Macquarie University Furniture Re-Use Store was set up as a method of incorporating sustainable initiatives into everyday university practices. This scheme allows Macquarie staff to re-use office furniture wherever possible across campus. The Furniture Re-Use Store can be found on Level 0 of 18 Wally’s Walk (C7A - old Library Building).
