Why save energy?
The majority (95%) of Australia's total energy consumption is from finite, non-renewable, polluting energy sources. This is contributing to climate change and is driving up costs. In addition, we are more dependent on energy than ever, with our consumption patterns still continuing to rise.
When we use electricity in our homes or at work in NSW, Australia, the electrical power is most likely generated by burning coal. Coal is a non-renewable resource and turning it into electricity releases large amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions into the atmosphere - approximately one kilo of CO2 per kilowatt-hour of electricity consumed.
CO2 and other greenhouse gasses trap heat int he earth's atmosphere, which leads to climate change. Cllimate change is associated with rising sea levels, loss of biodiversity, destruction of coastal habitats and low-lying islands, glacial melting, more severe weather patterns and the spread of tropical diseases.
Saving energy reduces your personal carbon footprint.
The fuels we rely on not only contribute to climate change, but also are a finite resources themselves, and we are starting to run out. Extracting the dwindling finite resources becomes increasingly difficult and dangerous, driving up costs. Increasing regulations on fossil fuels are also driving up costs.
Devices on standby mode (ie not switched off at the power point) still consume electricity that must be paid for - known as "phantom load". Phantom load may be of the order of 10% of the electrical energy used by a typical household. What a waste!
Saving energy reduces rising and unstable energy costs.
Since 2000, growth in Australia's energy consumption has averaged 1.8% per year. The following graph represents annual growth in Australia's energy consumption:
As a society, we have become more dependent on electrical appliances - many of which weren't around even a few decades ago! Mobile phones, laptops, tablets, cameras, electrical toothbrushes, alarms and many more appliances that have made their way into our everyday lives require energy.
