Through world-class research and teaching the next generation of undergraduate and graduate pioneers, we are changing the world.

Our research is world-leading and our research-led teaching trains undergraduate and graduate students to become leaders in their field. We focus our teaching and research in the areas of:

Our researchers and students have access to outstanding specialist photonics, quantum and optics labs, laser processing and optical characterisation facilities, and our on-campus observatory.  We collaborate closely with local, national and international observatories, research organisations, and companies, and we include nodes for three ARC Centres of Excellence.

In the most recent Excellence in Research for Australia we achieved ‘outstanding performance well above world standard’, as did our research in the sub-disciplines of astronomical and space sciences, and quantum physics.

Our teaching staff are active researchers and are recognised for their work at both national and international level. We place a strong emphasis on learning through practical experience, which takes place in some of the best-equipped undergraduate teaching laboratories in the country. Our strong industry and community links provide real-world PACE placements for all our students.
